Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko took part in the UN General Assembly High-Level Debate to mark the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention Against Corruption

On May 23, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko as a member of the delegation of Ukraine took part in the UN General Assembly High-Level Debate to mark the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Convention Against Corruption at the UN headquarters in New York.

The President of the UN General Assembly, UN Secretary-General, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and representatives of the Convention States parties attended the event.

During his speech, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine informed the participants about the achievements of Ukraine in the fight against corruption and made key reforms in this area.

In particular, the attention was paid to returning in cooperation with the international community $ 1.5 billion to the State Budget of Ukraine, the the creation and functioning start of new anti-corruption bodies, providing open access to the registers of beneficiary owners of Ukrainian companies and declarations of civil servants. 

Separately, Mr. Lutsenko informed about the challenges faced by the competent authorities in investigating of corruption cases.

"Globalization did not pass organized crime. While law enforcers have to wait for months or even years of permissions to disclose information about banking operations, corrupt officials are already using cryptocurrency," – said the Prosecutor General.

Summing up his statement, Mr. Lutsenko stressed that the inevitability of punishing criminals and confiscating their illegally obtained assets would serve as the best response to corruption and demonstrate the effectiveness of the UN Convention against Corruption.

A similar position on the need to deepen cooperation within the framework of the Convention was expressed during the speeches of the representatives of the States parties and confirmed the important role of its instruments in preventing, detecting and combating corruption at all levels.
