Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yevhenii Yenin met with the Chairwomen of United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child Renate Winter and UNICEF Country Representative in Ukraine Giovanna Barberis
On December 11, Yevhenii Yenin informed Mrs. Winter about the results achieved by the prosecution bodies in the area of children’s rights protection in criminal proceedings, during execution of criminal penalties and enforcement of coercive measures, as well as representation of children’s interests in court.
In addition, the active cooperation with the UNICEF Representation in Ukraine on improving the activities of prosecution bodies with regard to minors has been highly praised, namely training of the specialized juvenile prosecutors of regional and local levels at the National Prosecution Academy of Ukraine and implementation of joint projects, in particular, on introduction of mediation in criminal proceedings.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the priority directions of further cooperation, in particular with regard to children’s rights protection in criminal proceedings, prevention of juvenile delinquency, issues regarding protection of their rights during imprisonment and improvement of procedure for introducing new approaches to bringing adolescents to criminal responsibility.
According to the results of the meeting, the parties expressed their confidence in further constructive cooperation in the area of rights protection and support of children, especially those who fall into conflict with the law.
