Prosecutors of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the Field of Defense of the Western region sent an indictment to trial against a lawyer who, under the guise of help, misappropriated funds from the families of military personnel.

The investigation established that the accused presented himself as a «mediator» in solving issues with payments and searching for missing soldiers. He promised one victim to find a missing man, and another — to help receive proper payments in connection with the death of a serviceman.

The man enjoyed the trust of women and convinced them to transfer significant sums allegedly for «solving issues». As a result of his actions, two victims lost more than UAH 1 million.

The lawyer's actions are classified as fraud on a particularly large scale and attempted commission of a similar crime (part 4 of Article 190, part 2 of Art 15, part 5 of Art. 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). If proven guilty, he faces up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

Note: In accordance with art. 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is considered innocent of committing a crime until his guilt is proven in accordance with the procedure established by law and confirmed by a guilty verdict of the court.
