The prosecutor's office challenged too soft sentences in the beating of two women in Rivne region, one of whom later died

The Prosecutor's Office appealed the overly lenient sentence in the case of the beating of two women in the Rivne region, one of whom later died.

Prosecutors of the Prosecutor General's Office filed an appeal against the sentence of the Volodymyretsky District Court of the Rivne region, by which the accused was convicted of beating two women, one of whom later died in the hospital.

The court found him guilty of committing criminal offenses under part 1 of Art 122 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (intentional bodily harm of moderate severity) and part 1 of Art 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (hooliganism). The sentence imposed was 2 years of imprisonment with release from serving the sentence with a probationary period of 2 years. He was released from punishment for hooliganism due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.

The Prosecutor's Office considers such a decision excessively mild and inconsistent with the gravity of the crime committed and the public demand for justice. That is why the sentence was appealed in the appeal procedure.

The incident happened in June 2022 on the territory of a recreation center in the Varash district of the Rivne region. The accused, while under the influence of alcohol, inflicted numerous punches and kicks on two women during the conflict. As a result of the beating, the victims received moderate injuries recorded by the examination. Later, one of the victims, a local resident, died in the hospital.

The Prosecutor's Office will insist on the imposition of a real penalty commensurate with the gravity of the crime.

The pre-trial investigation was carried out by the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine.

Note: According to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime and cannot be subjected to criminal punishment until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a court verdict.
