Due to mushroom poisoning, 3 children died, 5 more were ill - a resident of Ternopil region is suspected of malicious failure to fulfill parental responsibilities

A resident of Ternopil region has been informed of suspicion for grossly failing to fulfill legally established duties for the care of children and for knowingly leaving a person in a life-threatening condition without assistance, who is unable to take measures for self-preservation due to minority, which resulted in death and other serious consequences (Article 166, Part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

On October 27, 2024, in a large family with 7 children and a girl who was visiting this family, they were poisoned by pancakes with mushrooms that the mother's cohabitant had collected in the forest. Despite the fact that the children showed all the signs of poisoning that same evening, the mother sought medical help only 3 days later – on October 30. As a result, 2 children from the family, the visiting girl, and the mother's cohabitant died. Another 5 children suffered health disorders classified as severe.

The children have been removed from the family; they require special care and long-term treatment.

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Chortkiv District Police Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Ternopil region under the procedural guidance of the Chortkiv District Prosecutor's Office.

Note: according to Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent of committing a crime until their guilt is proven in a lawful manner and established by a guilty verdict of the court.
